He keeps growing on me...

When I first saw Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock, I have to say I could not understand what the fuss was about. He was a great actor, but a heart throb? I didn't get it. Then I saw him in the newest Star Trek. Hot holy hell! What was I thinking? He may not be traditionally good looking, but there's a special something there - and it doesn't hurt that he has curly hair that's naturally red.

Les Miserables...

I don't remember how or when I was introduced to Les Miserables - I just know it was the first musical I was ever obsessed with as a kid. While all the girls were drooling over Phantom of the Opera and Eric, I would walk between classes humming 'I Dreamed a Dream' and 'Castle on a Cloud'. So, of course, when I found out that Les Miserables was coming to the big screen, I dragged my husband to see it, and I loved every minute of it. The costumes! The sets! Anne Hathaway! Hugh Jackman! Helena Bonham Carter! And, of course, this man - Russell Crowe.

Now, I know Russell Crowe is getting a bit of crap for playing Javert. People aren't really happy with his portrayal and how he sang the songs. In his defense, Russell is an amazing musician and a lovely singer - but the part of Javert is just not his range (either that or we're just so used to hearing basses sing it that it's a shock to hear someone who isn't a bass sing it). However I think he still did a good job of playing Javert, and towards the end of the movie, when Javert begins to question who he is and everything he believes, he got a bit more emotional and his singing had a bit more oomph, and was MUCH better as a result (and much closer to what I was used to hearing as a kid)

So, today, the last meatlocker of the year, goes to you Monsieur Crowe.

Meatlocker Monday - The Hobbit Edition

The husband and I went and saw The Hobbit on Friday (because we're big Tolkien nerds like that) and let me just say it did not disappoint. Especially this guy - Mr. Richard Armitage who played Thorin Oakenshield.

I'm alive, and... oh look... here's another handsome gent to look at!

I'm sorry I haven't been updating very regularly lately. Work started getting busy in August, and most of my energy has been spent working on my writing and focusing on that blog (It's over here in case you missed it!)

Last night we were at a friends house when Reign of Fire came on. Do you remember that one? It's where dragons take over the earth and burn everything to the ground. Christian Bale plays a grown up version of the kid who discovered the dragons, and I was surprised to notice that Gerard Butler is his best friend. I never realized he was in it!

So here, ladies and gentlemen, is Gerard Butler again - the hottest Scotsman alive!

Sons of Anarchy has been my favorite show for about 3 years now (I got into it a year late...) It's hard to pick a favorite character, but Opie Winston comes pretty close.

The Dark Knight Rises Edition...

The husband and I saw The Dark Knight Rises today and it was amazingly good. A little long, a little slow, but really really really good. I have to say that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a very long way from his time on Third Rock From the Sun.

And Tom Hardy as a bonus because he was fantastic as Bane (even if the voice was a little hard to understand)

Messing with the Kid...

A couple of friends and I had a girl's day yesterday. We ended up going to lunch and then we went off to see Magic Mike. It was an okay movie over all. Seriously the best parts were watching Joe Manganiello sew his own thong, Channing Tatum dance (because GOD that boy can dance!) and looking at this kid - Alex Pettyfer:

I won't deny. I feel a little bit like a cradle robber right now. Just a smidge. 

There's something about goalies...

They're crazy and quirky. They have to be. They have rubber pucks being shot at them. They also have to be pretty flexible in order to stop the pucks coming at them as a friend pointed out awhile ago when talking about her favorite goalie ;) They're also the most important part of the team - you could have all the best forwards in the league, who can get all the goals in the world, but if you don't have a good goalie to defend your team's net, you are nothing.

So, I give you, ladies and gentlemen, Jonathan Quick - probably one of the main reasons the Kings were able to make it all the way to the Finals to win the Cup.

Congrats on winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe - you earned it!

Hawkeye...

I finally saw the Avengers yesterday. It was pretty amazing. It restored my faith in Joss Whedon doing anything comic book related (he lost me there for a bit when he let Kitty Pryde just drift off into space in a giant bullet), it had great action scenes, great lines, and it made my inner Marvel nerd pretty happy.

Plus it had some pretty awesome eye candy: I mean there was Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr, and this guy...

Jeremy Renner. I've had a bit of a crush on him ever since 28 Weeks Later...

And to find out that he was playing Hawkeye?!? Well, that certainly didn't help matters (I've had a bit of a crush on Hawkeye ever since he and Iceman exchanged some jokes during the Onslaught story arc back in the 90s...)

Meatlocker Monday - Adventurer Style...

I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a pretty awesome show on SyFy called Destination Truth. In it a team goes around and investigates reports of paranormal activity and sightings of unusual creatures. The team is led by a really awesome archaeologist who goes by the name of Josh Gates.

Words cannot describe how much I love watching this guy on TV. He always has a blast, gets to visit some amazing places, and has a lot of really cool and funny stories to tell (I cannot recommend his book enough).

Meatlocker Monday: Damian Lewis...

The first time I saw Damian Lewis was in PBS's Master Piece Theater's rendition of The Forsyte Saga. Damian played Soames, and I instantly took a strong disliking of him. The guy had the emotions of a fly (which is to say none at all) and at one point in the series he rapes his wife. Can you blame me for hating him?

And then I saw Damian Lewis in Life - where he played the main character, a former detective who was accused of killing another cop and is sent to jail for life, where he starts reading about the philosophy of Zen. 12 years later the DNA evidence reveals that he was innocent all along, he gets released and ends up going back to LAPD as a detective even though he was given a pretty substantial settlement for being wrongfully imprisoned. Talk about a change! His character was charming, funny, and even though he was trying to be a better guy about loosing his wife, his friends, and 12 years of his life, he still did random crap like pulling over his ex-wife's current husband for minor traffic violations just because he can.

I think that was when I fell in love with him as an actor, because, damn, what a change to go from the most despicable person ever to someone like that!
